Compress PNG images

Make PNG files smaller. Nothing leaves your device.

Format
Optimize by

Your files never leave this device.

Compress PNG screenshots, logos and graphics right in your browser. With the format set to PNG, the tool reduces the image to 256 colors, which is usually invisible on flat artwork and often shrinks the file a lot. Compare the result with the original, then download it. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use

  1. Drop your PNG files onto the box, or paste a screenshot.
  2. Keep the format on PNG, or limit the longest side if the image is huge.
  3. Compare the result with the original using the slider.
  4. Download each file, or all of them as a ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a PNG without losing quality?

Keep the format on PNG and check the result with the comparison slider. The tool reduces the image to 256 colors, which looks identical on screenshots, logos and flat graphics but can show banding in smooth gradients.

Why is my PNG so big?

PNG stores every pixel without the usual photo-style shortcuts, so large images and photographs get heavy quickly. A full-screen screenshot can be several megabytes. Fewer colors or fewer pixels are the two ways to make it smaller.

Can a PNG photo be made smaller by changing the format?

Yes. A photograph saved as PNG is usually much larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. Switch the format to JPEG or WebP, then compare; keep PNG only if you need it for a specific upload.

Does PNG compression keep transparency?

PNG supports transparent areas, but check the preview after compressing to be sure, especially around soft edges and shadows. If transparency matters, compare the edges before using the file.

Is PNG compression lossless?

Not here. Reducing to 256 colors is a lossy step, even though it is hard to see on flat artwork. Strictly lossless PNG optimization would keep every color but save far less.

Can I compress a screenshot I just took?

Yes. Paste it straight from the clipboard with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac), and the compressed version appears in seconds. The screenshot is not uploaded anywhere.

Can I compress many PNG files at once?

Yes. Drop them all together; they are processed on your device and can be downloaded as one ZIP. There is no daily limit.

Why do screenshots and logos suit PNG, and photos do not?

PNG keeps crisp edges and flat colors exactly as drawn, which is why screenshots, diagrams, icons and logos are usually saved this way. Photographs are different: they contain millions of slightly different shades, and PNG has to store every one of them. The same picture saved as JPEG or WebP can be a fraction of the size.

Before compressing a large PNG, ask whether it really has to be a PNG. If it is a photo, the JPEG compressor will usually get a much smaller file with no visible difference.

What does reducing to 256 colors do to my image?

Reducing the palette to 256 colors replaces the thousands of shades in the file with the 256 that best describe it. On interface screenshots, charts and logos this is almost always invisible, because those images use only a handful of colors anyway. The file can shrink a great deal.

Gradients are the weak spot. A smooth sky or a soft shadow can turn into visible steps. Use the before and after slider and zoom in on the smoothest area; if you see bands, compress as JPEG or WebP, or keep the original.

How do I make a big screenshot smaller?

Screenshots from large or high-density displays can be thousands of pixels wide. If the image will sit in a document or a help article, set a maximum side of 1600 or 1920 pixels and the file shrinks twice: fewer pixels and fewer colors. For exact dimensions, use the resize tool first.

If you plan to share the screenshot publicly, also check it for private details. The blur and redact tool can cover names, emails and account numbers before you compress.

Does a smaller PNG change how it looks on a website?

A lighter PNG loads faster, and that is usually the goal. Compare the result at the size it will actually be shown, not zoomed in. If you need an even smaller file, converting it to WebP with the image converter is worth testing as well. Other formats and settings live in the main image compressor.

Limits and privacy

  • The 256-color step is lossy: photographs and smooth gradients can show visible banding, so compare before downloading.
  • A PNG that is already well optimized may not get smaller; then the original is returned unchanged.
  • Very large images (around 50 megapixels and more) can fail on phones with little memory.

Use it in your AI assistant

With the local MCP server, an assistant can run compress_image with the PNG format on files on your computer, for example “compress all the screenshots in this folder”. The files stay on your machine.
